About Spirit of the Midwest Region 5
Spirit of the Midwest Region 5 is a membership organization of female singers, who meet regularly to rehearse, perform, socialize, and have fun. We currently have 700+ singers of all ages, from all walks of life, and in all parts of the region.
Performance
One main purpose of choruses and quartets in Spirit of the Midwest Region 5 is to sing for our communities. We sing at annual shows, community events, and annual competitions. We also perform Singing Telegrams for Valentines Day and Mother's Day. We have groups who are available to sing at your next function or event. If you're looking for a unique musical experience to liven up your event, please check out our Choruses and Quartets sections above.
Education
In addition to sharing our music with others, another great passion of ours is learning more about the art of acapella singing. Vocal instruction is a regular part of chorus rehearsals and a very important component of the chorus experience. A couple times each year, we will get coaching from a visiting master in the art of barbershop, where we learn many fabulous tricks of the trade.
Competition
In the spring of every year, Region 5 holds a chorus and quartet competition. Competitions are a special time for quartets and choruses from our region to come together to sing for each other, receive constructive feedback from a panel of International judges, and especially see old friends and make new ones. The winners of the regional competition in both quartet and chorus categories then compete at International Competition, which is held in the fall in a major city each year.
Winners of Division A Small Choruses and Division AA Midsize Choruses are invited to participate in the Harmony Classic if their scores are among the top five highest in their division. The Harmony Classic is held during the International Competition and Convention.
Region 5 offers opportunities to join a chorus in many cities across several states. Joining a chorus is a wonderful way to learn how to sing or improve your existing vocal skills. In a chorus, the director will assess your vocal range and place you in one of four voice parts. You'll be educated in how to sing your best with that section of chorus. The ability to read music is helpful but not a requirement. On this journey, you'll meet many amazing, talented, friendly and helpful women and develop friendships that last a lifetime.
Most choruses have a number of members who form their own quartets in addition to singing with the chorus. Region 5 is currently home to a number of wonderful quartets, and we are very proud of them!
